Recently, we spent the day with our good friend Sam profiling his unique collection of amps, a few of them lesser known. We finished the day with a small set of profiles ranging from clean to mean for this pack. This unusual combination made for a fun set of tones that sit right at home in rock and roll history.

74 DUAL REVERB

• 10 Studio profiles (5 Single Coil & 5 Humbucker)

This early-70’s silver panel version of the iconic American high-headroom, 2x12, 100-watt powerhouse did not disappoint. We grabbed a couple of gain stages from its Vibrato channel along with 3 more pushed with a few pedals (profiles marked ‘SS’, ’T’, and ‘UP’). Deep, punchy, and organic describes the tones we profiled from this beauty.

K LEAD

• 4 Studio profiles (2 Single Coil & 2 Humbucker)

This little-known vintage amp packed a lot of volume in its small package. Full and rich for a completely solid-state amp, we were pleasantly surprised. We captured a couple of gain stages that find themselves right in the middle of Classic Rock territory.

LEGENDARY

• 6 Studio profiles (3 Single Coil & 3 Humbucker)

This tube-preamp, solid-state power amp, rock and roll machine is best known for providing Billy Gibbons’ guitar sound on ZZ Top’s iconic Eliminator album. With its logic-defying EQ controls, and low dynamic range, this was a challenging amp to coax a good tone out of, but we succeeded in grabbing a few. Dive into 80’s blues-rock territory and let those pinch harmonics ring out!
