There’s no surprise that the punchy, rich, and LOUD sound of this beast of an amp was a favorite of such players like David Gilmour and Pete Townshend. Normally featuring four EL-34’s in the power section and four 12AX7’s in the preamp, the model we got our hands on was running at half-power with only two power tubes… yet at 50 watts it was still blisteringly loud! As we all know, old amps need some love and often have their quirks – in this case only the “Normal” channel worked properly but that didn’t stop us from capturing a number of amazing tones that were both full and articulate, warm and clear.
We profiled the Wattage through our new 2 x 12 cab using a combination of an Alnico Gold and a G12H30 for a deep, balanced tone with plenty of presence. To revisit the history of this amp, we swapped the speakers for a pair of Thames, based off the Fane’s that would traditionally have been matched with it for a more vintage, darker and fuzzier sound (profiles marked “F”). Lastly, we ran a KoT clone into the front for some different gain stages and the combination took us back to the heavier rock days of our earlier guitar journeys (profiles marked “KB”). Playing the Wattage was an experience, to say the least. Now get a glimpse of this awesome amp and see why it has claimed its spot among the greatest amplifiers of all time!
